Calf will star in zoo displays

Look what I can do! Cute elephant calf Leelee will be the star of the Elephantastic displays, starting at Whipsnade Zoo this weekend.

Leelee, just one year old, will be centre stage at the daily demonstration, which gets under way on Saturday, May 24.

She is one of three Asian elephants in the display, which will be held in a new £250,000 purpose-built arena with tiered seating for 800 people.

The little jumbo will show how she is being trained to lift her feet and lie on her side for regular health checks.

And she will also give zoo visitors an insight into how elephants are used to move logs in the Asian logging industry.

Her bigger companions will demonstrate how they can push a large tree trunk, but Leelee will use a Pilates ball.

The display starts at 2.30pm each day, and lasts for about 20 minutes.

There is no extra charge for attending the demonstrations, which run from this weekend until September 7.
